Edinburgh
in 2030 - a bleak vision of the future where truth is
distorted by corruption, human frailty and depravity are exploited for
revenue, hope is banished and love discouraged.
Set at a time when the UK has split into separate city states, Edinburgh
is ruled by the Enlightenment Party. The city's economy is based
on tourism, particularly as it hosts the 360-day Edinburgh Festival. The
Council has not only rid the city of television, the Blues, computers,
the internet and private cars, they have also eradicated crime. Until
the first murder,
that is!
Organised prostitution, night clubs, gambling and mock executions - features
of the perpetual Festival - are exclusive to tourists and provide the
city's only source
of income.
The gruesome homicide causes a stir in
this otherwise crime free city-state, and the authorities, who have not
had to deal with crime in years, are at a loss. Information leaking out
would be disastrous for the city.
Convinced that a sadistic serial killer has returned, the “City
Guardians” are forced to recall rebel detective, QUINT, to investigate.
But what he and his new lover,
KATHARINE, uncover will shake the very foundations the new society is
built upon.
